An oil paintings by Arthur Kampf fetched up to €18.000 in 2013 at Lempertz, Cologne

This painting was executed by the German painter Arthur Kampf. As his subject he chose a young laborer, who has taken off his shirt. His nude upper body is turned toward the viewer while his face is depicted in profile. The almost vertical incidence of light suggests the time of day is around noon. The free and gestural brushstrokes give the painting the feeling of an atmospheric snapshot.



The painting is signed lower right in ‘A. Kampf’. It is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age, such as slight craquelure where the paint was thickly applied. The frame shows some signs of wear. The stretcher measures 71.5 x 55.5 cm, and the frame 82.5 x 66.5 cm.



Arthur Kampf (1864-1950)

Arthur Kampf studied at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Peter Janssen the Elder. Afterwards he took a position as an assistant teacher initially and then as a professor at the academy. In 1898 he moved to Berlin. Here he became a member and later President of the Royal Academy of Arts. From 1915 to 1925 he was director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. As a history painter Kampf created numerous monumental commissions and paintings with allegorical and historical or war themes. The majority of Kampf’s oeuvre is now lost or was destroyed in the war.
