The present painting depicts a group of boats on the calm sea of the Szczecin Lagoon. Hans Hartig painted the scene with board impasto brush strokes, which characterize his works. The water is composed from a mosaic of dabs of color in shades of green, gray and brown. Overall, the skillfully arranged composition is rendered in muted colors. All his life Hartig dedicated himself to the landscapes of Northern Germany and the Baltic Sea, creating numerous harbor views of this kind in the Szczecin region.
The painting is signed lower right ‘Hans Hartig’ as well as signed ‘Hans Hartig’ and titled ‘Am Haff’ on the reverse. The work is in good condition; there are some abrasions and color flaking along the edges due to rubbing of the frame. The frame shows light signs of wear. The framed work measures 47 x 57 cm, the fibreboard measures 35.5 x 45.5 cm.
