The Scottish etcher and watercolorist Robert Anderson (1842-1885) has captured this atmospheric coastline by using a gentle color range. The attractive composition is characterized by light and shadow effects in the Impressionist manner. Some fishermen unload their daily catch from a brig on the shore. The beach, waters, cliffs and clouds appear in charming color shades. Some seagulls and two sailboats in the background provide little accents.
The watercolor is signed ‘Robt Anderson’ lower left. It has been laid down on cardboard and mounted in a gilt wooden frame with glazing. The work is in good condition, showing tiny mounting holes and discolored lightning edges. Very good overall impression. The dimensions, including the frame, are 55 x 69 cm. The sheet is 30 x 40.5 cm in size.
Robert Anderson (1842-1885)
Born in Edinburgh, Robert Anderson became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1879. In 1880, he exhibited at the Royal Academy of London. Anderson was a sought-after etcher and watercolorist already during his lifetime. Among his favorite subjects are coastlines and fishing scenes. (cko)
