“Pferd” (“Horse”) is a stunning, large scale acrylic painting by the German artist Volker Dierkes. It depicts the lower body of a horse and a human figure drifting in the water. The artist uses stark colour contrasts to create a tension within the painting, whereas the different shades of blue emanate a mood of peace and quiet. The intense colours and pure representation are typical of Dierkes’ work. This painting belongs to a series of works dealing with the subject of water and swimming.



The work is in very good condition with only a few colour abrasions. The canvas is signed “Volker Dierkes” and dated “2010” on the back. The work is made of two parts. The small lower part measures 45 x 200 cm, the large upper part measures 155 x 200 cm. Both stretchers are bolted together on the back. The overall dimensions are 200 x 200 cm.



Volker Dierkes (b. 1942)

Volker Dierkes was born in Colmar, Alsace in 1942. He studied fine art in Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Berlin. For twenty years he lived and worked in Spain and Germany. He permanently moved to Berlin in 2000. Dierkes became renowned for his monumental sculptures in the public space. Later he established himself as a painter of large colourful canvases. The artist’s works are exhibited throughout Europe. One of his granite sculptures, “Kopfspaziergang” (“Head Walk”) from 1989 can be admired in Berlin, Charlottenburg.
