Hausner’s first “Adam” painting was painted in 1957 and he has varied it often afterwards. Adam, the central autobiographic projection figure of the artist, embodies the state of Hausner’s own soul – a topic that can be found more than once in his body of work. Rudolf Hausner’s precision of expression is also mirrored in the colour lithograph „Adam Suchbild“ (74/200). Adam’s face seems clear, cool and secretive. The background shows an often intertwined, seemingly endless circular stair in front of an otherwise plain apartment house. The particular intensity of the colours and the depth of the depiction are additional crucial characteristics of this great lithograph.

The colour lithograph “Adam Suchbild” by Rudolf Hausner has been made in 1976. The sheet size is 47.8 x 63.7 cm. It is numbered and inscribed in the lower left „74/200 Adam Suchbild 1976“ and signed in the lower right „R. Hausner“.

Rudolf Hausner (1914 – 1995)

Rudolf Hausner started his studies at the Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste under Carl Fahringer and Karl Sterrer. His first artistic phase was influenced both by Impressionism and Expressionism. After the end of the war he started working in his destroyed studio in Vienna and founded a surrealist group in the Austrian Art-Club with Edgar Jené, Ernst Fuchs, Wolfgang Hutter and Fritz Janschka. Later both Anton Lehmden and Arik Brauer joined. Resulting from this was their first exhibition in the Vienna Konzerthaus. 1959 Hausner was co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. From then on the termFantastic Realism (first introduced by Johann Muschik) was used for Rudolf Hausner’s work, instead of the general term surrealism. From 1966 onwards, Hausner was a professor in Hamburg, and from 1968 he was professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. A particularity in Rudolf Hausner’s technique is the use of transparent, glazed resin-oil, which is layered in more than 10 layers. As underlayers, acrylic colours are used, which give the colour a particular luminosity and depth.
