The present silkscreen is a work by Thierry ‘Mr. Brainwash’ Guetta (born 1966), featuring the subject that the artist has designed for Madonna’s music album ‘Celebration’. Guetta's artistic style continues the tradition of Pop Art, which the artist mixes with contemporary cultural phenomena, forming the so-called ‘Pop-graffiti-hybrid’. In his depictions, Guetta mixes past idols, including Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin, with contemporary icons like Madonna and Kate Moss. Despite the obvious influences of the great Pop Art artist Andy Warhol and the graffiti artist Keith Haring, Mr. Brainwash has developed his own handwriting, which brought him international fame.
The work is signed in the print with ‘Mr. Brainwash’ to the right margin. It is in very good condition, showing minor wear to the edges. The dimensions are 90 x 90 cm.
Thierry ‘Mr. Brainwash’ Guetta (born 1966)
The French street artist Mr. Brainwash (MBW) stars the main character in the documentary ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ (2010) alongside the British street artist Banksy (born 1974). Guetta and Banksy met in 2005 at a film shoot under Guetta's direction. Guetta is said to have assigned the direction of the film to Banksy, in order to devote himself to art. Guetta's artistic career is since then often attributed to Banksy, who is believed to having intended to proof that the commercialization of street artists not necessarily presupposes talent. In some art circles it is speculated that Mr. Brainwash and Banksy are the same person. This is, however, denied by Banksy.
