This lithograph was printed in 1975 by Erker Presse in St. Gallen. It shows an animal-like figure with a long, pointed snout, short horns and a shaggy tail. It is a motif that the artist has used also for the lithographs ‘Figure verte’ and ‘Figure ocre’, in the present case the peripheral ornamental border and the green resp. ocher base is not printed.

The lithograph in colors is signed lower right in pencil ‘Wifr(edo)’ and inscribed lower left in pencil ‘E.A.’. The sheet is in very good condition. The image measures 56.8 x 48.7 cm, the sheet 67.5 x 56 cm

Wifredo Lam, (1902-1982)

The Cuban artist Wifredo Lam studied at the Art School in Havana. Already in 1923, he emigrated to Spain and later to France, where he befriended Pablo Picasso and André Breton and was inspired by the art of the time. His Surrealist works, internationally exhibited, often refer to the Santeria cult known and practiced in Cuba. (fea)
