The present ink drawing is the work of Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979). It shows an abstract female nude, which was applied by the artist in dynamic lines. Broad lines alternate with delicate lines and form a powerful entity that only vaguely indicate the contours of the woman.



The sheet is signed lower right, ‘Schawinsky’, and dated lower left, ‘1960’. It is in good overall condition with slight creases, minimal blemishes on the edges and discoloration of the paper due to age. The work is mounted in an aluminum frame with linen-covered front. The frame shows light wear marks. The overall dimensions, framed, are 52 x 59 cm, and the the sheet measures 35.2 x 43.2 cm.



Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979)

The Swiss painter, photographer and stage designer Alexander Schawinsky belonged to the Bauhaus circle around Walter Gropius. From 1921 to 1923, he was trained in the architectural studio of Theodor Merill in Cologne. In 1923, he briefly attended the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1924, he went to the Bauhaus in Weimar, where such influential artists as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy were his teacher. In 1925, he went at the Bauhaus in Dessau along with Walter Gropius. There he mainly devoted himself to experimental photography. In 1933, he emigrated to Italy. In 1936, he moved to the United States, whose citizenship he accepted later on. In 1941, he moved to New York, where he was primarily active as a painter from 1950. Schawinsky's work has been exhibited in major museums, including the MoMA in New York. (cko)
