Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979) has captured the contours of this female nude with broad and black brushstrokes. The dynamically applied lines of the limbs enhance the composition with vibrancy. Alexander, ‘Xanti’, Schawinsky was a painter, photographer and stage designer who belonged to the Bauhaus-circle around Walter Gropius.



The work is signed lower right, ‘Schawinsky’. It is framed in two silver frames between a mat of fabric. The condition of the sheet is good with some handling crease creases, foxing, light browning and a tear of approximately 3 cm length in the upper left. The frame is worn. The overall dimensions, framed, are 61.4 x 46.2 cm. The sheet measures 45 x 30 cm.



Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979)

The Swiss painter, photographer and stage designer Alexander Schawinsky belonged to the Bauhaus circle around Walter Gropius. From 1921 to 1923, he was trained in the architectural studio of Theodor Merill in Cologne. In 1923, he briefly attended the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1924, he went to the Bauhaus in Weimar, where such influential artists as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy were his teacher. In 1925, he went at the Bauhaus in Dessau along with Walter Gropius. There he mainly devoted himself to experimental photography. In 1933, he emigrated to Italy. In 1936, he moved to the United States, whose citizenship he accepted later on. In 1941, he moved to New York, where he was primarily active as a painter from 1950. Schawinsky's work has been exhibited in major museums, including the MoMA in New York. (tm)
