The present oil painting by Friedrich von Bömches (1916-2010) dates from 1986. It shows an abstract composition that suggests the bust of a human figure with a blood-red head. Depicted without contours, the head flows seamlessly into the background. Beneath is represented the breast of the figure with white shirt. The painting is characterized by an impasto and dynamic brushwork. In the transition between the figurative and the abstract, the present painting is a typical work of the artist - powerful in the expression and intense in the colors.

The painting is signed and dated upper right, ‘Böhmches 86’, and mounted in a wooden frame. The painting is in overall good condition with some areas of retouching in the right image half. The frame shows some nicks. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 56 x 74 cm. The board measures 53 x 71.5 cm. The painting is accompanied by a catalog entitled ‘Friedrich von Bömches /Malerei und Grafik’ from 1992.

Friedrich von Bömches (1916-2010)

Friedrich von Bömches was a son of a Transylvanian family and worked as a painter, graphic artist and photographer. After he had to work as a forced laborer in a Russian quarry as a result of the First World War, he moved to Germany in 1979. In his works, the artist deals with his experiences of his touching past. Even during the war, he made photographs and sketches from the things that surrounded him. He also dealt with the tragedy of human existence and the subject of death, mostly in a biblical and mythological context.
