Three signed post cards depicting works of Gilbert & George who occupy one of the most influential positions in British art society, today

In their works, Gilbert & George deal with existential issues such as sex, religion, violence, addiction, hope and death. An important source of inspiration is the East End of London, where the couple has lived and worked for over 40 years. The present set is composed of three post cards revealing the works ‘The Tuileries’ (1974), ‘Fired’ (1983) and ‘Light Headed’ (1991). The motifs are very characteristic for their artistic output, not least because the figures of the artists are integrated in each composition.

The post cards are signed with blue or black pen on the front side ‘Gilbert and George’. The backsides are typographically inscribed with work-related information. The cards are in very good condition and only show minimal crease marks. The works are matted and measure 10.5 x 15 cm. The framed overall dimensions are 32 x 36.7 cm.

Gilbert & George (b. 1943, 1942 respectively)

The two artists Gilbert and George met at the St Martin's School of Art (now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design) in London in 1967 and have been working together, ever since. They usually create large-scale works to express their feelings and thoughts. The artist couple focuses on the playful and naive handling of provocative and rather taboo issues. Their oeuvre had a significant impact on the movement of the ‘Young British Artists’. Gilbert & George are represented by the White Cube gallery in London, and the gallery Arndt in Berlin. Their works belong to numerous public collections, including the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Tate Britain in London, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. (cbo)
