Item Details
Description
Pencil on strong paper
Russia, 1961
Dmitri Krasnopevtsev (1925-1995) – Russian artist
Signed with monogram and dated at the lower right edge ‘K 61.’
Dimensions: 30 x 21 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin
Pencil study by Dmitri Krasnopevtsev, who was a well-established still life painter during his lifetime and notably supported by the Soviet intelligentsia; his works on paper fetch up to €19,700 at international auctions

In the early 1960s, Dmitri Krasnopevtsev was especially focused on still life compositions of recurring broken ceramic bowls, fossils, dried plants, and shells. He seemed to follow symbolist and surrealist traditions and created still life motifs that are often compared with the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, with whom Krasnopevtsev shared a type of world view characterized by a certain state of disillusionment. The present work reveals a pencil study, presumably drawn in preparation for a later still life. The objects are presented next to each other and already imply the reduced lines and smooth surfaces of Krasnopevtsev’s paintings.

The work is signed with monogram and dated at the lower right edge ‘K 61.’ (clearly faded). It is in good condition considering its age; the paper is slightly browned and shows faint light foxing along the cutout frame of the passe-partout. The sheet dimensions are 30 x 21 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 44.5 x 34.5 cm.

Dmitri Krasnopevtsev (1925-1995)

Dmitri Krasnopevtsev was born in Moscow and studied at the Academy of Art, from 1942 to 1946. In 1955 he also received a degree from the Surikov Art Institute. Since 1956, Krasnopevtsev exhibited his works at home and abroad. AfterLife magazine published one of his still lifes, he was criticized in the Soviet press. It was not until the mid-1980s, when the Perestroika years under Gorbachev allowed Krasnopevtsev’s ‘rehabilitation’. His works were increasingly presented in museums and awarded with prizes, such as the ‘informal’ Triumph Prize in 1993. Krasnopevtsev was a major representative of the ‘Shestidesiatniki’ artists active in 1960s. His works are still very sought after collectible items on the international art market and occasionally fetch up high six-figure sums at auctions. (cbo)
