Florschuetz is an internationally renowned artist and one of the most successful photographers of his generation. In his early works he created fragmentary photographs of his own body and thus explored new ways of perception. By zooming and changing the perspective he rendered his hair, fingers or tendons a symbolic character apart from their actual physical affiliation. The resulting photographs appear as autonomous pictures that stimulate a creative reflection on supposedly familiar things. The present triptych assembles the images of three left hands folded into a fist. The work is an impressive example of the artist’s early approach and turns out to be a unique piece in the presented format.

The work is signed with black felt tip on the backside of the frame ‘Thomas Florschuetz‘ as well as inscribed ‘13’. The C-prints are made on Kodak paper and in very good condition. The photo paper measures 61 x 51 cm and the image size is 59 x 40 cm, respectively. The framed overall dimensions are 82 x 137 cm.

Thomas Florschuetz (b. 1957)

Thomas Florschuetz, who was born in Zwickau, moved to East Berlin in 1981, where he had his first exhibition in 1983. In the end of the 1980s he gained recognition for his images of body parts. Since 1988 his works have been regularly exhibited all over the world. He later moved to West Berlin, followed by stays in New York and Brazil. In 2000, he was active as an ‘Artist in Residence’ in California. Florschuetz has been honored with numerous prizes and awards. In addition to his body pictures, the artist's oeuvre includes monumental flower pieces, images of fighter jets and architectural photographs. In 2007 he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Florschuetz lives and works in Berlin. (cbo)
