This lot comprises seven bottles of 1986 vintage Château Gloria from the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux.
Saint-Julien is an appellation in Médoc by the Gironde estuary, adjacent to Pauillac. The predominant grape variety here is Cabernet Sauvignon and the wines are powerful, complex and long-lived. The wines from the northern part of the appellation are comparable to those from Pauillac, while in the south the wines tend to be more elegant like those from Margaux. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 there are no premier cru wine estates in Saint-Julien, although the best grand crus of the region, including Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, would most likely be rated even higher today.
1986 was a very good vintage in Bordeaux with tannin-rich wines that develop wonderfully over many years.
The 1986 vintage Château Gloria was rated 89 points by Wine Spectator in 1992. The wine was rated 17 of 20 points by René Gabriel in 2002.
The fill levels are excellent (4x into neck, 3x base of neck). The labels and capsules are in perfect condition.
Château Gloria
Château Gloria is a relatively young, yet already very well-known wine estate in the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux, founded by one of the legends of the French wine trade, Henri Martin (1903-1991). In 1942, Martin, who was the mayor of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle for a long time, bought six hectares of land and a wine cellar from Château Saint-Pierre. Over the following years, he bought more and more land from the surrounding wine estates and established the estate’s reputation, which has remained with it to this day. Château Gloria is now owned by Martin’s son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud.
Château Gloria has 48 hectares of vineyard area, planted with 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 % Merlot, 5 % Cabernet Franc and 5 % Petit Verdot.
