This lot comprises twelve bottles of 1989 vintage Château Talbot from the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux.
Saint-Julien is an appellation in MĂ©doc by the Gironde estuary, adjacent to Pauillac. The predominant grape variety here is Cabernet Sauvignon and the wines are powerful, complex and long-lived. The wines from the northern part of the appellation are comparable to those from Pauillac, while in the south the wines tend to be more elegant like those from Margaux.
1989 was, like 1988 and 1990, a great vintage in Bordeaux. The continuously warm weather allowed an early harvest and the wines have a relatively high amount of tannins and alcohol. These wines usually taste wonderful now but may also develop further through proper cellar storage. This wine has now reached its peak and tastes significantly better than its classification as Quatrième Cru would suggest.
The 1989 vintage Talbot was awarded 90 points by Rober Parker in his Bordeaux book (4th Edition) in 2003 after having tasted the wine in 2002. René Gabriel awarded it 18 out of 20 points in 2004. Wine Spectator magazine awarded the wine 88 points in 1999.
The fill levels are excellent (into neck). Some labels are slightly soiled; the capsules are in perfect condition.
