The appellation Pauillac produces some of the world’s most highly-prized and expensive red wines. Situated to the northwest of the city of Bordeaux, near the Atlantic coast, its vineyards are located on dried-out swamplands. Vines take root in gravel dunes with subterranean clay lens. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon can develop a unique depth of taste and power, so the grape variety therefore makes up a large percentage of the Pauillac cuvées. The tannin-rich, powerful, concentrated wines require longer bottle-ageing in order to differentiate and reveal their taste. The Classification of 1855 put the vineyards of the Lafite-Rothschild and Latour estates ahead of the pack, awarding them Premier cru status. Mouton-Rothschild has also belonged to the club since 1973. In second place are the Deuxième crus of Pichon-Longueville-Baron and Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande. For decades, however, experts have judged them as being at least on a par with their Premier cru counterparts. This is also the case for numerous other top wines from this appellation.

The fill levels are good (2x top shoulder) to excellent (10x into neck). The labels and capsules are in perfect condition.

Château Lynch-Bages

Château Lynch-Bages is a winery in the Pauillac appellation. It was accepted as a Cinquième Cru Classé by the official Bordeaux Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, although most wine experts today agree that the estate produces considerably better wines than the classification suggests. The winery was bought by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1938, who established it as one of the best wine-growing estates in Bordeaux over a period of 35 years. It has been run by his grandson, Jean-Michel Cazes, since 1976, who is also an hotelier within the region.

Lynch-Bages’ vineyard area covers 90 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (73 %), as well as Merlot (15 %), Cabernet Franc (10 %) and Petit Verdot (2 %). Additionally, approximately 4.5 hectares are planted with white grape varieties – 45 % Sauvignon Blanc, 40 % Sémillon and 15 % Muscadelle – used to make their white wine, Blanc de Lynch-Bages.
