Typical three quarter length portrait by Constantijn Netscher. His works of the same size are quite sought after by private collectors and achieve high prices in the international auction market

The present painting is the work of the Dutch painter Constantijn Netscher and dates from the 17th century. It depicts a lady with a whippet before a landscape. The sitter is shown in three-quarter length and features the typical fashion and hairstyle of the time. With both hands, she holds the collar of her dog seated on her side. The fine brush strokes of the painter skillfully draw attention to the youthful beauty of the sitter. The elegant pale flesh tones of the woman, in the face enriched with rose accents, are particularly striking. The lights in the eyes and the well-shaped lips enhance the portrait with give great vividness. The artwork is listed in the archive of the Netherlands Institute for Art History Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie as portrait by Constantijn Netscher (see RKDimages, Constantijn Netscher, illustration no. 0000019329).

The painting is indistinctly inscribed on the whippet’s colar, ‘*DLV’. It is well presented and mounted in a gilt stucco frame. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals lines of infilling to the craquelure and small scattered areas of retouching. The frame shows light wear consistent with age. The overall dimensions, framed, are 60 x 50 cm. The tenter frame measures 48 x 38 cm.
