This painting by Austrian painter Hans Canon was probably made around 1850 in Vienna. The portrait shows a men, who can be identified as office holder or pastor due to his ruff. Contemplative and slightly melancholically he looks at the viewer. The influence of Peter Paul Rubens is very clear by means of the chiaroscuro-effects and brushwork.

The painting is signed ‘Canon’ at the lower right. Painting and frame are in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The face shows tiny touch-ups near eye and nose and the edges of the canvas bear minimal color flaking where the frame has rubbed. A color chip to the lower right. In places the surface shows craquelure, e.g. at the ruff and on the forehead of the man. The framed dimensions are 71 x 59 cm, while the stretcher frame measures 58 x 46 cm.

Johann Straši?ipka, whose pseudonym was Hans Canon, was born in Vienna in 1829. From 1845 on he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. His teachers were amongst others Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller und Carl Rahl. After the academy and a short period as officer in the Austrian Army, he started traveling Western Europe, Italy and the Orient. His history paintings and portraits were strongly influenced by the Old Masters, especially by Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. (nlu)
