Description
Netherlands, 17th century
Circle of Reinier Zeeman (c.1623-1667) – Dutch marine painter and etcher
Black wood frame
Overall dimensions, framed: 114 x 169 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Harbor scenes were a subject often depicted by Zeeman. The present impressive view of the walled Amsterdam, painted by an artist active in Zeeman’s circle, is captured in his style of painting
The present capriccio is the work of an artist active in the circle of Reinier Zeeman. It depicts a harbor view of Amsterdam. To the left is shown the mouth into the Ijsselmeer, whilst in the background are depicted the spires of several churches, including the Oude Kerk. Cityscapes together with marines were a major genre in 17th century Dutch painting, as economy depended on sea trade. A realistic Dutch landscape style developed, seen from ground level, often based on drawings made outdoors, with lower horizons, which made it possible to emphasize the often impressive cloud formations that are so typical in the climate of the region, and which cast a particular light.
The painting is mounted in a black wood frame. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals restoration to much of the sky, and scattered areas of restoration to the foreground, architecture and the figures. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 114 x 169 cm. The stretcher measures 97 x 152 cm.
Reinier Zeeman (ca. 1623-1667)
Born in Amsterdam, Reinier Zeeman possibly stayed in Paris before 1650. His works show a certain influence of Willem van de Velde the Elder. Zeeman worked as a painter and etcher, and his works represent contemporary events, allegories, Amsterdam city views and ship depictions. Today, works by Zeeman are on display in major museum collections, such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum and at the Albertina.
