The present painting is a work of the landscape painter Franz Richard Unterberger and has presumably been painted during or shortly after his trip to Norway. It depicts a dramatic shipwreck scene on a Swedish coast, but the representation of the landscape and its moods still remain the main artistic interests of the artist and clearly recognizable as such to the viewer. Franz Richard Unterberger belongs to the most important artists of the 19th century; he established successfully as landscape painter and even gained acceptance at the salons.

The painting is in good condition considering its age. The work is signed lower right ‘FR Unterberger.‘. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching on the edges as well as tiny spots of restorations in the depiction. The varnish appears a bit uneven. The gilded wooden frame is in good condition and shows the inscription ‘The Swedish Coast F. R. Unterberger’ lower center. The framed work measures 78 x 114.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 69 x 96 cm.

Franz Richard Unterberger (1838-1902)

Franz Richard Unterberger was born in Innsbruck and studied under Clemens von Zimmermann (1788-1869) and Julius Lange (1817-1878) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He continued his artistic training at the Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf, where he attended the classes of the landscape painters Andreas (1815-1910) and Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905). Both masters encouraged the young painter to travel to Norway, which provided him a great source of artistic inspiration. In 1864, Unterberger moved to Brussels, whereas he undertook further trips to Southern France and Southern Italy. Franz Richard Unterberger was a successful painter already in his lifetime and exhibited in the major art exhibitions in Munich, Brussels, Paris and London. A larger part of his work is now in the Landesmuseum in Tyrol.
