An atmospheric seascape from the oeuvre of Arnold-Graboné who gave painting lessons to Eisenhower and Churchill; paintings by the artist fetch over €4,400 at auction

This painting by Georg Arnold Graboné depicts a maritime motif in the artist’s characteristic technique. The impasto paint is not applied with a brush but with a palette knife, enabling the painter to form an almost three-dimensional landscape. Another distinctive feature is the brilliance of the subtle color palette. In addition to paintings of the Bavarian Alps, Arnold created numerous maritime landscapes of the North and Baltic Seas. Here he rendered a returning fishing boat at dusk. The setting sun bathes the scene in a soft pink light.

The painting is signed lower left ‘Arnold Graboné’. On the verso the canvas bears the artist’s label titled ‘Fischerheimkehr auf der Nordsee’ and signed ‘Arnold Graboné’. The work is in very good condition. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 91.5 x 101.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 70 x 80 cm.

Georg Arnold Graboné (1896-1982)

After Georg Arnold Graboné was injured in the First World War, he devoted himself to painting and studied in Stuttgart and Vienna. Here he was initially influenced by cubism, but soon turned to traditional landscape painting. He undertook numerous travels through Europe, the Middle East and North America, where he found his subject matter. Back in his hometown Munich, Arnold became a master student of Heinrich von Zügel and Leo König before he studied in Berlin under Max Liebermann. From 1932 he was a professor and later principal at the Zurich academy. End of the 1930s he settled in Upper Bavaria. After the war, General Dwight D. Eisenhower acquired a painting by the artist, and subsequently received painting and drawing lessons. Winston Churchill was also taught by Arnold. In subsequent years the German painter enjoyed international exhibition successes. Today some of his works are in the collections of the Eisenhower and Kennedy family. (tfa)
