Accurate townscape of Mainz with views of the Rhine and the surrounding landscape
The present painting depicts a view of the German town Mainz. The townscape is characterized by the Rhine in the background and the rather rural and partly hilly surrounding landscape. The work was painted by an artist active in Germany around the middle of the mid-19th century. Only in the second half of the century, Mainz experienced significant changes caused by the incorporation of new districts of the town and the extension of the city walls.
The canvas is unlined and has been supported by a small piece of linen on the verso. There are two light vertical marks, caused by the pressure of an underlying stretcher bar which has been removed in the meantime. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially upper areas of the painting. The wooden frame is in good condition with small traces of wear. The framed work measures 74 x 100 cm and the size of the stretcher is 54 x 84 cm.
