View of the Nuremberg castle wall by Schwendy, who is known for his finely executed townscapes; his small-scale works fetch up to €4,700 on the auction market
This work depicts one of Albert Schwendy’s typical motifs. The German painter specialized in the depiction of picturesque townscapes, which he rendered in a very fine manner of painting. Here he captured the view of the Spittlertorgraben, part of Nuremberg city wall. The medieval buildings rise before a lightly clouded sky, a small garden with a peasant woman drying the laundry is displayed in the foreground. A delightful little scene!
The painting is signed and dated ‘A. Schwendy. 1885.’ lower left. It is in good condition. The new varnish was applied irregularly. The edges are slightly rubbed due to framing. The left edge and at the upper left corner show minor color chips (hidden by the framing). The frame is slightly bumped. The framed work measures 51 x 45.5 cm, the board measures 29.4 x 23.5 cm.
