This work by Johann Heiss is a remarkable document of the Baroque culture. Paintings in similar formats sell for more than 44,000 euros in the international art market

The present painting is the work of the German baroque painter Johann Heiss, and dates from the 17th century. The many-figured composition shows an allegory of the summer in the form of a harvest festival in the typical Baroque manner. Most likely the work was originally part of a cycle of the four seasons. A larger painting of the same subject is today part of the collection of the Sparkassenstiftung in Memmingen-Mindelheim. In his work, Heiss was inspired by Flemish and mainly Italian painting.

The canvas was recently relined. There are some light framing marks to the edges. It appears to have been consolidated. There is a small paint loss upper left. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching affecting much of the background, the flash tones and the still life. The wooden frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 122.5 x 100.5 cm. The stretcher measures 110 x 88 cm.

Johann Heiss (1640-1704)

Johann Heiss was born in Memmingen in 1640. Here there received an artistic training with Hans Conrad Sichelbein and Johann Sichelbein. Between 1663 and 1664, he was in service of Duke Eberhard III of Württemberg and lived in Stuttgart. In 1677, however, he moved to Augsburg and was active there from then on. Today, his works can be seen in various German museums as well as at the Louvre in Paris, the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
