The present landscape painting by Salvatore Petruolo (1857-1946) depicts an Italian mountain village immersed in a gentle sunset glow. With the red roofs and the colorful facades, the small village is depicted in the typical southern Italian style and stands out clearly from the misty mountain backdrop. The field and meadows in the foreground are spotted, the trees, by contrast, are worked out more detailed. It is with great skill that Petruolo succeeded in capturing the atmospheric lightning and perfect idyll of this Italian mountain village.
The painting is overall in good condition with a slight discoloration, framing marks, some abrasion and small stains. The canvas has been laid down on cardboard. The frame from a later period is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The image dimensions are 34.5 x 44.5 cm, and the frame is 44.5 x 53 cm in size.
Salvatore Petruolo (1857-1946)
Salvatore Petruolo was a student of Gabriele Smargiassi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. He is recorded for his wide range of coastal landscapes in the surroundings of Naples and some from Calabria. His landscapes from 1875 to 1898 show the influence of the School of Posillipo and Edoardo Dalbono. Thereafter, his paintings feature symbolist elements. His studio in Naples was visited by famous personalities, such as Emperor Frederick III, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Louise, the sister of King Edward of England. Today, works by Petruolo are on display in major museum collections, including the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples.
