This small-scale paintings by the English painter Campbell Archibald Mellon depicts a tranquil river landscape with a mother to her child walking along the Thames. In the background extends a dense forest. With the finest brushwork the artist captured the peaceful atmosphere of a beautiful summer’s day. In addition to his bustling beach scenes, Mellon also created some depictions of this kind, in which portrayed England’s lush green landscape. The overcast sky is a characteristic feature, with cumulus clouds hovering dramatically over the summer idyll and threatening to patter down at any moment.

The painting is signed lower right ‘C. A. Mellon.’ as well as inscribed ‘The Thames Shillingford’ on the verso. It is in good condition with a few small retouchings to the sky. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 35.5 x 28 cm, the stretcher frame measures 25.5 x 18 cm.
