Prestigious hunting still life with game bird
Dimensions: 66.5 x 91.5 cm
Opulent hunting still life, which features a masterful painterly execution and lifelike rendering of the motif
Hunting still lives with game bird and wild game were part of the furnishing of every hunting lodge or country mansion. Since hunting was a privilege of the gentry, the presentation of those paintings showing the yield of such activities was vital for noble families for keeping up their reputation. Hunting still lives were regarded as embodiment of power and wealth.
This still life displays a particularly good haul. It was probably painted around. After the principle ofAbundantia, various species of poultry are positioned on a table. In the background on the right hand side pigeons are positioned in a basket. In the foreground is a grey goose, woodcocks and several singing birds, including kingfishers. Furthermore, on the left hand side a fruit bowl is displayed, carrying pears, grapes and apples. The presence of the singing birds and the kingfishers shows the opulence of the gentry, because they do not serve as food, they are merely prestige objects symbolizing strength and superiority of mankind over nature. Characteristically for still lives, the colors are kept in dark shades and motifs are painted rich in detail and masterly naturalistic.
The painting is in a good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The surface shows craquelure and several retouchings. The dimensions of the stretcher are 66.5 x 91.5 cm. (nlu)
