Description
New Orleans, LA (Newcomb Pottery), 1926, made by Joseph Meyer and decorated with a band of blackberry blossoms on the narrow shoulder by Sarah "Sadie" Irvine (1885-1970), 1926, matte glaze in shades of blue and green, marks include conjoined N and C for Newcomb College, impressed JM for Joseph Meyer and conjoined S and I for Sadie Irvine, date mark impressed PK27, original paper label for Newcomb Pottery, 3 in. x 4-1/2 in. two contrasting accretions on sides, two tiny chips on foot rim . Notes: Irvine (1885-1970) received a Diploma in Art from Newcomb College in 1906, where she continued as a graduate student 1906-1908. Irvine also studied at the Art Students League, NYC (after 1906), with Arthur Wesley Dow in Ipswich MA (1908), and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1914). She exhibited in international exhibitions and with national art associations. In 1908 she was named an art craftsman in pottery and retained the title until 1929. Afterwards, she continued to work at the college until 1952.
