Emil Orlik (1870-1932)

Emil Orlik was born in Prague as the son of a master tailor and initially studied at the private painting school of Heinrich Knirr in Munich as well as the Academy of Fine Arts there. He returned to Prague in 1894. He was strongly influenced by a journey to Japan in 1900/1901; when he returned to Europe, he moved to Vienna and joined the Vienna Secession. A year later he was called on to be a professor at the state school of the Berlin museum of applied arts and was appointed as head of the graphic art class. Among his students were George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Oskar Nerlinger and Josef Fenneker. Orlik was active in Berlin throughout his life, although he frequently undertook trips abroad among others to China, Korea and Japan.
