RenƩ Magritte (1989-1964)
RenĆ© Magritte studied from 1916 to 1918 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. First, he earned his living as a pattern designer for wallpaper, and from 1923 on as a poster and commercial artist. The piano teacher of his brother Paul brought Magritte in contact with the Dada movement. Because of a fixed term contract with a Brussels gallery in 1926, Magritte could for the first time fully concentrate on his Artistic work, and thus his first surrealist image origin in this year. Magritte became friends with surrealist artists such as AndrĆ© Breton and Hans Arp and exhibited in 1938 on the āExposition internationale du SurrĆ©alismeā in Brussels. Magritte also worked as an editor for various magazines and newspapers, and made several short films. RenĆ© Magritte is one of the most important surrealist artists. His factually descriptive images obtain their magical effect by paradoxical juxtaposition of everyday objects. (fea)
