Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Miró was born in Barcelona where he grew up and started his artistic studies. He went to the academy La Llotja against his parents’ will who had wanted him to work in a more traditional way. After a short illness he was finally allowed to drop the apprenticeship and fully enroll at Francesc Galí’s Escola d'Art. In 1917, he met Francis Picabia who brought him closer to the Dadaists, but also strongly influenced was Miró by the Fauves and the Cubists. In 1920 Miró moved to Paris, where he lived in the midst of the creative artists of the 20th century. He made the acquaintance of Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti, and exhibited together with Dalí, Tanguy, Max Ernst Meret Oppenheim and in various Dadaism- and Surrealism exhibitions. He moved to Mallorca in 1956 where he focused first on sculptures and later also on ceramics and, again, on oil paintings. (fea)
