Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978)

Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 as the son of Italian parents in Volos, Greece. In the years before the First World War, he developed a style that he named together with Carlo Carrá pittura metafisica and which exerted a strong influence on the development of Surrealism. After 1919, he became more interested in traditional painting techniques and worked in a neo-classicist neo-Baroque style, while keeping on returning to his early metaphysical themes. De Chirico is chiefly known for the works he created between 1909 and 1919, his metaphysic period. He was an outspoken opponent of Modern Art and composed several pieces of literature regarding his aversion. In 1924, he became a member of the Paris Surrealist group. (fea)
