Characteristic composition by Le Corbusier, who was like Picasso deeply fascinated by the ‘sign of the bull’; the auction record for one of his lithographs in colors currently sets at around €40,000
Le Corbusier's late graphic works reveal tendencies of cubist compositions by Picasso, with whom Le Corbusier had established a long friendship. Hence, the depiction of the bull also characterizes the artistic output of the Swiss-French artist. In his graphic works, Le Corbusier often described the bull with vivid colors and grotesque deformations, emphasizing his commitment to the ‘joie de vivre’. The present lithograph is titled ‘Taureau I’ and shows a particularly powerful interpretation of the subject.
The work is numbered and signed with pencil lower left ‘134/150 Le Corbusier‘. The work is in good condition considering its age; the paper is slightly browned and shows minimal crease marks. The backside reveals light remains of an old mounting. The image size almost corresponds to the sheet size of 72 x 54 cm.
