Elvira Bach is famous for her iconic, neo-expressionist portraits of women; the auction record for a painting of the artist currently sets at around €40,000

In her works Elvira Bach focuses on female stereotypes. Her unique style is characterized by a high recognition factor and fascinates by bright colors, curved lines and the inexhaustible creativity of the artist. For the first time Elvira Bach now creates works in three-dimensional design. For this purpose, she first paints a motif which later serves as the background of her work. In a second step, Bach produces a duplicate, in order to cut out a number of elements which are then installed within the background motif by using small ridges of foam. The present work reveals a smoking lady dressed with an azure blue dress. It turns out to be an impressive example of the mentioned new technique.

The work is signed with pencil lower right ‘Bach‘ and numbered lower left ‘3/30‘. The sheet is fitted lower left with a blindstamp by Gallery F, Kranenburg. The work is in very good condition. The image size measures 54 x 76 cm and the sheet measures 61 x 82 cm.

Elvira Bach (b. 1951)

Elvira Bach was born in 1951 in Neuenhain. She is a German post-modern painter and well-known for her colorful depictions of women. Bach studied at the Staatliche Glasfachschule Hadamar as well as at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. She undertook study trips to the Dominican Republic, Senegal, Saint Lucia, and Italy. She took part at the documenta VII in 1982. Together with painters like Bernd Koberling, Luciano Castelli, Rainer Fetting, Helmut Middendorf, Salomé and Bernd Zimmer, Bach is a member of the artist group of the ‘Jungen Wilden’, whose cheerful and positive style was meant to break with previous cerebral artistic trends.
