In this lithograph vertical and in circle-shape drawn gestural lines are laid on a ground which is horizontally structured. It is a typical work by the artist, who is an important representative of the Informel.

The aquatint at hand is signed lower right in pencil ‘Hartung’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘58/75. There is a tiny and insignificant stain in the lower margin, the sheet is in very good condition. The image measures 63.8 x 45 cm, the sheet measures 76.2 x 56.8 cm.

Hans Hartung (1904-1989)

Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung was born in 1904 in Leipzig. He worked as a painter and graphic artist. As early as a teenager he turned to the non-objective painting. In 1924, he began studying art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. After living in Menorca and in Paris, he received the French citizenship in 1946. After the war, Hartung became one of the most important representatives of the informal art. He exhibited several times at the documenta and at the Venice Biennale in 1960.
