Robert Longo experienced his international breakthrough in the 1980s, when exhibiting his iconic series ‘Men in the Cities’. An exceptional draftsman of his generation, he has once described his work as follows: ‘I think I make art for brave eyes. I don't want to make art that will pat you on the back and tell you everything is going to be okay. I want to make something that's much more confronting. You don't look at it, it looks at you as much as you look at it.’ The present leporello is an impressive example of his artistic output and assembles 7 works as digital prints in a row.

The leporello is verso fitted with a typographic label; it is signed by the artist and numbered with pencil ‘52/75’. The backside of the print is also stamped ‘FORTY ARE BETTER THAN ONE, 2009. SCHELLMANN ART PRODUCTION MUNICH – NY’. The work is in very good condition; the surface is only minimally rubbed in some parts. One motif measures 24.5 cm in height and 31.5 cm in width. The sheet dimensions of the leporello are 175.5 x 32.2 cm. The framed overall dimensions are 179.5 37.2 cm.



Robert Longo (b. 1953)

Robert Longo started his artistic training at the Buffalo State College, where he graduated in 1975. At that time it was his fellow student Cindy Sherman, who inspired him to deal with different media such as installation, performance, video art and photography. Since then he has expanded his artistic output to further fields such as painting, printmaking and film. Since 1976, his works have been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions at international institutions, including the documenta, the MoMA, the Stedelijk Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The Hamburger Kunstverein as well as the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg also organized retrospective exhibitions. Longo lives and works in New York. (cbo)
