Item Details
Description
This is a United States Cavalry Sibley Tent Stove from the Civil War era. The stove was developed for use in the "Sibley Tent", which could accommodate twenty soldiers and their gear. The metal stove is 29.5" high and 19" in diameter at the base. This stove was commissioned by the Yellowstone National Park and used there until its removal in the mid-20th century. Both the tent and stove were designed by Henry Hopkins Sibley (1816-1886). Sibley graduated from West Point in 1838 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons. He was in active service in New Mexico 1860-1861 until resigning the day of his promotion to major in the 1st Dragoons on May 13, 1861. During the Civil War he sided with the Confederacy where he served as a general. After the war, he served as a military advisor to the Khedive of Egypt. One of the most basic and important pieces of Civil War camp equipment. This piece shows various dents and surface rust, but overall a rare and desirable early piece of Americana.
