Italian Renaissance panel painting, Adoration of the Shepherds, dated center on rock "1520", Martino Piazza da Lodi, born circa 1475, died circa 1530, oil on panel, 24-1/2 x 19-1/8 in.; fine 16th century style Florentine tabernacle frame with etched or stenciled decoration. Panel with pest damage, grime, small points of flaking, edges with chips, small points of retouch, loss to gilding at nimbus, crackle, craquelure; frame with pest damage, wear to gilding, some minor losses, areas of retouch in blue robe and blue sleeve of shepherd left, also in face of shepherd with clasped hands. Provenance: Sessa Fumagalli Collection, Milan; Raimondo Orselli, Florence; Orsino Orselli, Florence; Private Collection. Reserve: $12,000 This painting is reproduced in Bernard Berenson's [Italian Pictures of the Renaissance: Central Italian and Northern Italian Schools], London, 1968 edition, page 336, plate 1468, as a dated work of 1520 by Albertino and Martino Piazza da Lodi. We are grateful to Everett Fahy, Chairman of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for offering his opinion of the painting. He writes "From the excellent detail photos you have provided, I believe you have an autograph work by Martino Piazzo da Lodi. In 1968 Berenson's listed it as a work by Martino and Alberto, but from what we now know about the painters' styles, this looks like an independent work by Martino, and very fine".
