Description
Satsuma-ceramic with gilding. Japan, Meiji-period (1868 – 1912)
An especially beautifully painted, signed vase, holding a depiction of Kannon Bosatsu, the Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara, however, in the Chinese form, the female deity Guanyin. Kannon wearing a golden dress is riding a ferocious dragon, which is shown in the three-clawed Japanese style. Around the feet and neck are geometric patterns. Particularly neat craquelure above the light-beige base. The signature SHUN-RYO with red seal, Shunryo. On the bottom, the mark of the manufactory Satsuma Satsutosha. Very good condition.
