Iron, copper and some gold. Japan, 18th to 19th cent.
Of marugata form with rounded and slightly raised rim, one hitsu, decorated in takazogan with a nio with typical athletic body shape and clad in a loin cloth, the head with a waving garland shown standing in the heavy rain (densely incised vertical lines) under a pine placed on a rock; nio (lit.: Γ’β¬Εtwo kingsΓ’β¬) are the guardians placed at the gates of temples; the nagako ana, unusually, is of gourd shape visible on the obverse side, blackening, some gold nunome.
