Description
Painted wood. Indonesia, Bali, late 19th cent. to 1st half 20th cent.
Sculpture with multiple parts, eloquently depicting the „King of the Birds“ in the typical Indonesian style, with heightened expression. Garuda is the mystical falcon and he is the pack animal of the high god Vishnu. He was born as the son of the wise man Kashyapa and his spouse Vinata. He has a human body. In this structure he does not have a bird’s face, but rather a demon’s with large protruding globular eyes, bushy eyebrows and a wide mouth with fangs. He is wearing a crown, his garment is rich with decorations. Also notable is his bulky stature. His colourful painting wings are plugged into it. Signs of age, some fingers and possibly some attributes are missing. Overall, well preserved sculpture as well as paint.
