Wood, lacquer techniques, China, cyclical dating to Weibing, either 1741 or 1801
PERIMETER 228,5 x 108 CM
Very elaborate and appealing, well-preserved screen, depicting on the front side a vast and spirited scenery, set with multiple figures and architecture; the back offers magnificent naturalistic and poetic compositions; The front is done in relief-lacquer technique and presents palace architecture, showing an open audience hall with the emperor amid his cortege; further there is depicted the lively scenery around the palace; the scenery is enlivened of trees, foliate, decorative rocks and high mountains in the far distance; all set within a border bearing round and floral motifs, coins inscribed Shou, Jixiang, Fu, etc; further inscribed Weibing, cyclical dating, either 1741 or 1801 (earlier or later not considerable). The obverse side of the screen presenting magnificent nature depictions, tastefully composed with rocks, blossoms, and flowering trees and colorful birds; set within elaborate border arranged with tendrils, 20 phoenix-couples and ruiy (longevity). From a Greek collection Note: “Koromandel†lacquer is the common Western term for a special lacquer technique. The lacquer is produced by covering the wood surface with a white chalk ground that is overlaid with layers of black lacquer. After the drying, the respective depictions get incised in the lacquer coat to re-expose the white ground. The present screen offers rich white sections on the front side, while the reverse offers a black ground with color.
