Description
Netsuke, wood, horn. Japan, 19th cent.
Very amusing and masterly crafted portrayal of a sinewy man clad only in a loincloth with a big protruding belly. He is wearing shoes, has long hair with a small cap and holds the band of a wicker box filled with eggs. One egg is held close to his eye for an exact view against the light to test its freshness. Spirited satirical rendition with beautiful color, himotoshi on buttocks, extremely shortened signature, presumably read as MEI-JITSU, who was a student of the renowned Meikeisai Hojitsu. In our netsuke auction presenting netsuke from the Pingotticollection (1998), we had a similar example: No.12, signed Hogyoku (same school).
HEIGHT 5,9 CM
