Frank Shepard Fairey, born February 15, 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina, is an American contemporary graphic designer and illustrator who came out of the skateboarding scene. He became known for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign and his Barack Obama "Hope" poster in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. His work is included in many US and British Museums collections, as in, for example, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Fairey became first involved with art, when he started to draw on skateboards and T-shirts in 1984. In 1988, he graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy, and in 1992 from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. In1989 he created his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign and the Obey Giant campaign. Fairey founded a small printing business in Providence, Rhode Island, called Alternate Graphics, specializing in t-shirt and sticker silk-screens. This gave him the possibility to continue pursuing his own artwork. American filmmaker Helen Stickler made a documentary film about Shepard and his work, titled "Andre the Giant has a Posse". The film premiered in the 1995 New York Underground Film Festival and has been seen since in more than 70 festivals and museums internationally. He specialised in guerrilla marketing, clients included Pepsi, Hasbro and Netscape, founded together with his wife Amanda the Studio Number One design agency, where they produced many cover albums, created with friends "anti-war, anti-Bush" posters, founded the Swindle Magazine, wrote the books „The Art of Shepard Fairey“ and „Philosophy of Obey (Obey Giant)“; donated original cover art to the 2008 album Body of War done for Iraq War documentary, made the Barack Obama "Hope" poster in the 2008 U.S. presidential election and the frontpage in Time Magazine “occupy Wallstreet”.
