Imao Keinen (1845-1924)

Writing when the artist was still alive, Louise Norton Brown paints a vivid picture of the man, his art, and his influence. A few excerpts will suffice to suggest the range of all three:

Imao Keinen is the doyen of present-day Japanese painters. He was born in Kyoto on August 12th, 1845, the third son of Imao Senka. When eleven years old he commenced his artistic education and entered the studio of Umesawa in Tokyo. Three years later he joined classes in painting and [calligraphy] under Suzuki Hyakunen and took up the study of Chinese classics with Yumin Sangoku. In 1871 he established a private art school in KyÅto, which became one of the famous Japanese studios. It is safe to say that two-thirds of the modern painters of Japan have been Keinen’s pupils. Like all great artists, Keinen never became a slave to any one school. Even Occidental art had its influence upon him and he made a large collection of European printed pictures. Gardening has been Keinen’s chief hobby, aside from his profession, however, and he is known among the old school garden makers as an expert cultivator of bonsai, or trained pot plants.

Imao Keinen (1845-1924),

Geboren in Kyoto am 12.08.1845 als dritter Sohn von Imao Senka. Mit 11 Jahren begann sein Interesse für Kunst. 3 Jahre später begann er bei Suzuki Hyakunen Malerei und Kalligraphie und bei Yumin Sangoku chinesische Klassiker des Holzschnittes zu studieren.

1871 gründete er eine private Kunstschule in Kyoto, später bekannt als eines der berühmten japanischen Studios. Man kann mit Sicherheit davon ausgehen, dass zwei drittel der modernen japanischen Maler Schüler Keinen’s waren.

Ab 1880 begann er als Professor an der Kyoto Präfektur Kunst Schule zu lehren.

1904 wurde er Mitglied des Kunst Komitee des kaiserlichen Haushalts und 1919 Mitglied der kaiserlichen Kunstakademie.

Wie alle großen Künstler hat sich Keinen nie selbst einer bestimmten Schule zugeordnet.

Unter anderem entwickelte Keinen großes Interesse an abendländischer Kunst, welche sein späteres künstlerisches Schaffen beeinflusste. Außerdem er legte eine große Sammlung europäischer Drucke an.

Keinen’s wichtigstes Hobby neben der Kunst war das Gärtnertum und er ist auch bekannt als meisterlicher Bonsai Züchter.
