Description
Yitzhak Bak (1896-1974).
Untitled, ca.1940-1950. Acrylic on tin, signed.
Pastoral landscape: green mountains, blue skies, red-roofed houses and a herd of grazing cows; shepherd in a wide-brimmed hat looking at the view and playing the flute. The painting is bordered with yellow, black and brown lines.
Painter Yitzhak Bak, grandson of the printer Nissan Bak, was born in the Old City of Jerusalem. His talent for painting led Boris Schatz to suggest to him to study in "Bezalel", but his family objected and he studied on his own. To earn his living he painted houses in Jerusalem and owned a workshop for signs. Bak painted and restored many monumental murals in Jerusalem, which were destroyed after the Jordanian occupation, among them "Tife'eret Israel" synagogue, "Hachurva" and "Armon HaMashi'ach" in the Bukhari neighborhood. The murals and ceiling in "Mea Shearim" Yeshivah from 1950 are considered the peak of his creations; he painted views of holy places in Eretz Israel, the Twelve Tribes, animals and the Zodiac in a variety of colors. "Mizrah" prints, Shanah Tovah cards and Succah decorations which he designed were distributed in the country and worldwide and they appear up to the present day on Simchat Torah flags and Succah decorations (his name is not mentioned)
44X33 cm. Fair-good condition. Paint flakings. Framed
