Description
Two tokens issued during the American Civil War, by the Felix Dining Saloon, a Jewish restaurant in New-York.
1. Obverse: Name and address of the restaurant: "Felix Dining Saloon, 256 Broadway, New York" and the Hebrew word "Kosher". Reverse: The date, 1863, and an Indian Head surrounded by 13 stars.
2. Obverse: Name and address of the restaurant and the Hebrew word "Kosher". Reverse: the Union Shield and the legend: "Constitution and the Union".
During the American Civil War, coins were hoarded and became scarce. Privately issued tokens filled the gap, issued by a wide range of merchants. Even though many Jewish merchants issued tokens, only the Felix Dining Saloon token has Hebrew letters
Diameter: 19 mm. XF, AU.
