Description
HISTORIC BOUDOIR CABINET PHOTO OF NATIVE AMERICAN & (2) LETTERS - Albumen of Lacota Chief Rain-in-the-Face (circa 1835-1905), by David Frances Barry (1854-1934), Dakota Territories, stamped, signed and with the subject's name pasted on at bottom. In red walnut molded frame with gold liner, matted and glazed. OS: 23 1/2" x 21", SS: 12 1/2" x 9 1/2", good condition. This Chief's action instigated and he was among the Indian leaders who massacred George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment at the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. The lot includes two letters from the photographer, which feature an image of Barry with Rain-in-the-Face on the letterhead, as they became fast friends late in life. One letter is about Bill Cody's son griping that he never paid for his photos.
