Description
AFTER JOHN WESLEY JARVIS (NY, 1780-1840) - "Portrait of DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York, 1824-1828", oil on canvas. Identified on label verso from The Brooklyn Museum, both as an acquisition in 1918 and as a 1951 gift from Emma L. Hyde. Housed in a magnificent gilt gesso molded frame, OS: 62 1/2" x 52 1/2", SS: 50" x 40", relined. A similar portrait of an older Clinton by Jarvis hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. DeWitt Clinton brought about the construction of the Erie Canal, also served as US Senator and Mayor of New York City. Additional photos are on our website: thomastonauction.com
