ENGLISH COFFER - Oak Paneled Wedding Chest, circa 1680, with transistional linenfold carved top panels having fluted frame, the front having vine carved rails centering on greenman heads and spoon carved stiles with lion heads at top framing two panels featuring different family heraldic emblems, the center frame with lockplate having vine entwined portraits of the wedding couple, all raised on scroll bracketed legs from continuous stiles. The sides have linenfold panels and fluted frames to match the lid. The lid has the original hinges, the interior has a later covered till and replaced bottom plate. The lock tongue is intact, but the lock itself has been removed. 25" x 47" x 20". Good condition, losses to carvings, nice age and use patina. "F.K., Philadelphia" printed on the back long ago.
